An Integrated View of 3rd and 4th Dimensional Consciousness
By Jay Whitham

Part 1

Human beings have within us a capability that serves as a consciousness filter/focus mechanism. It has two modes – Autonomic and Directed (i.e. autopilot and manual control). When we are totally immersed at the pure third dimensional level of consciousness the system functions on “autopilot”. In this mode it allows us to sustain the level of consciousness needed for the experience of life in the physical world without specific effort, not unlike the autonomic functions that sustain breathing, heartbeat and circulation, digestion, cell growth, etc. It works so smoothly and without the apparent need of a person to think about it that we don’t even realize it is there.

We have been programmed with the ability to switch to Directed mode when we make a conscious free will choice to do so, but this does not happen until some level of higher consciousness has been attained. When we begin to have awareness that something beyond the dense world of the physical senses is part of us and we are part of it, the desire for more contact with, and knowledge of that something, starts to arise.

This quiet but insistent voice has been called by many names, but if you are reading these words you already know this voice within yourself. This is the emergence of the higher consciousness. The part of our Self that has its experience in the third dimension of matter ordered by time is only a small part of who we really are. Experience at this level is so amazingly real in its feel and appearance, and is so strongly reinforced by the shared experience of those around us, that most spend many lifetimes learning that this illusion is simply that, an illusion.

This aspect of the experience that makes it so challenging to see beyond the “veil” so to speak, is the same aspect that makes it so potentially valuable for growth at the soul level when we are finally able to do so. As the level of consciousness increases and the small voice becomes more clear and insistent, the natural desire is to engage Directed mode (i.e. manual control).

Engaging Directed mode or manual control is as simple as choosing to do so. The challenge is that we are seldom trained in how to operate this consciousness filter/focus system. This is rather like trying to operate a complicated and sophisticated piece of electronic equipment without a manual or someone to teach you how it works. The early results of trial and error are frustrating, painful, sometimes dangerous, and unlikely to reveal all, or even much of the potential that is contained in the device. In ages past, and in some limited situations to this day, it has been the custom to teach this knowledge to the young, meaning that those who possess it and have developed and worked with it, pass it on. The earlier in life one receives the training, the more effective the result; not unlike watching how naturally and easily a child learns to work with a computer while an adult may struggle, resist, and even give up in frustration.

Our Being, our True Self, experiences itself at all of the many levels or dimensions of its existence at all times. The filter/focus mechanism that is the subject of this discussion regarding third and fourth dimensional experience is part of a system that allows us to isolate the levels from each other so we can be focused in, and gain maximum benefit from, each level at all times. (This is somewhat of a “mis-description” because it is only at the third level that time is a factor.) For this discussion, our focus is on the integrated dual consciousness of the third and fourth levels; but, it is important to know that there are many other levels at which we exist. In a similar way to which we eventually integrate the third and fourth dimensions of consciousness, we will integrate higher dimensions when we are ready.

As we seek to move from auto to direct control of the filter/focus mechanism, or system, there is a progression in our experience. Let’s first use some analogies to help get clear on the concept and then we can look at ways to enhance our skill at mastering this power. Consider a character on a video screen in a 3D video game. You are the player and sit in a chair watching the screen with a joystick control in your hand. This control allows you to shift your perspective at will. You can move into a 3D virtual reality that puts a part of you in the screen so that you are immersed in the game. From this perspective your experience is so “real” that you are no longer aware that it is a game in which you are immersed and that you are also sitting in a chair, holding the control and watching the same experience from outside the screen. The control will also allow you to pull back to any vantage point you choose while remaining in the 3D game. It is like you are in the center of a sphere with the ability to see in all directions at once from any place within the sphere. If you choose, you can see yourself from the treetops outside your house sitting in the chair watching yourself in the screen of the 3D game. You could then pull back farther and have a view of your whole city. At the same time you can see yourself in the tree watching you in the chair watching you in the screen of the 3D game, with that “Self” still immersed in the virtual reality of the game, unaware of anything outside that virtual reality. You could choose to pull back to a vantage point where you can see the whole earth and the continuum back down to you in the 3D game. With control in hand you can then return to the perspective of you sitting in the chair, aware of all the other simultaneous vantage points you have, but choosing to be focused in this one at this time, still watching the Self that is immersed in the game on the screen. You use the filter/focus capability to put yourself in the vantage point that you choose. Of course, if the Self, whose perspective is immersed in the 3d virtual reality inside the video game, is not aware that you are also sitting in the chair with control in hand, watching and directing, it could be a very isolating and frightening experience.

Let us use a different analogy to illustrate the progressive emergence of integrated third and fourth dimensional consciousness. See yourself sitting in a theater watching a character in a film on the screen. While the character is immersed in its linear experience, it is not aware of you sitting in the theater and follows from frame to frame, scene to scene, reacting to each situation in its turn. You in the theater, have the perspective that allows you to see what is unfolding around the character, what perils or pleasures are about to present themselves. Because you care about the character, you find yourself talking to the screen, offering guidance, warnings, suggestions, etc. – i.e. “Don’t open that door!” Of course, the character can’t hear you and opens the door to face the consequences of doing so. Now consider that as your consciousness begins to integrate with that of the character, you continue to talk to the screen. At some point as you yell, “Don’t open that door!”, the character stops, looks around and says “Did you hear something?”, listens for a moment and hearing nothing else, shrugs and opens the door to the typical result.

As your consciousness continues to integrate with that of the character, it happens that the character receives increasingly clear communication, hears “Don’t open that door!” and does not open the door, thus creating a better outcome than before. With this level of communication established, imagine the character is in a scene with three doors. You sit in the theater and can see that door #1 holds an unpleasant, difficult experience, door #2 holds a positive, uplifting experience, and door #3 holds a neutral experience. You yell “Choose door #2!” and the character says “I hear you, but what if you are misleading me, or maybe I am just imagining your voice in the first place?”, and exercising free will, chooses door #1 or #3. As this plot continues you use your perspective from the theater to offer guidance, and increasingly often the character accepts the guidance and gets a good outcome.

This builds trust and faith to a point where the character always seeks and listens to the guidance that you offer before taking action, understanding that from your perspective you can see a larger picture than that available at the level of life in the film, so to speak. At this point, the awareness has developed so the character is constantly conscious of the guidance provided by you sitting in the theater. This allows the character to move through the “story” much more smoothly, and to collaborate on or co-create a script that allows the best of experiences (that is those most conducive to growth, not always the most pleasant) to manifest at all times.

Yes, the character on the screen is you. Perhaps more accurately, the character on the screen is the part of you that is immersed in a totally third dimensional perspective and experience - your physical, outer Self, living in the dense world of matter ordered by time. The part of you sitting in the theater is your fourth dimensional consciousness, your Higher or Inner Self that knows you as the spiritual being that you really are and is always aware of your oneness with Divinity. At the level of your Higher Self, the perspective is not ordered by time, at least not in the way it is experienced at the lower level. The Higher or Inner Self remains constantly aware of the purpose for which you chose to come into this physical life and seeks to guide you to fulfill that purpose.

You can see from the analogies presented that an integration of third and fourth dimensional consciousness offers awesome potential. To live fully in the physical experience with all that is available to absorb from the senses, the action, the very deliciousness of life at that level, but to do so with full access to your higher level of consciousness to guide you and keep you from becoming lost in the physical world, presents the opportunity for accomplishments, growth, and service to Source that is beyond description with mere words. To choose the perspective in any moment or situation from which to view what is happening and your place in the Universe, all the while being aware of the different perspectives you hold, is a gift that contains within it access to all the power of creation.

The purpose of having a material or physical life experience is to accomplish elements of Soul growth that are not possible by any other means. It is also to contribute to the constant creative expression and experience of Source by being Source in the unique form of “you”. This is intended to be a maximum growth experience, one of Joy, Love, and Light. This is only possible when we are able to integrate our third and fourth dimensional consciousness so that each serves the whole.

This piece was guided and inspired by Lord Kumeka. I wish to acknowledge and express my gratitude for his loving presence and guidance that is always with me. In the next installment we will explore concepts of integrated consciousness in practice and how to master the controls of your filter/focus capabilities.
